# [!] Unable to find a specification for `X` depended upon by `Y`

**Code:** `Unable to find a specification` · **Category:** iOS · **Seen on:** iOS

CocoaPods can’t find the pod (or version) in its spec repos — stale local specs, a private spec repo not added, or a typo.

## Meaning

New pod versions need pod repo update. Private pods require their source in the Podfile. Renamed/deprecated pods also disappear.

## Common causes

- Local spec repo outdated
- Private spec repo source missing in Podfile
- Pod name typo or pod removed
- Version not published

## Quick fix

1. pod install --repo-update
2. Add source 'https://…/private-specs.git' to the Podfile
3. Check the pod name/version on cocoapods.org

## Detailed fix by platform

### Ruby

1.

```swift
source 'https://github.com/mycompany/Specs.git'
source 'https://cdn.cocoapods.org/'
```

## How to diagnose

1. **Name** — Exact pod name
2. **Sources** — Podfile sources
3. **Repo** — Last updated?
